CLASS RESULTS - Judge Di Atherton (Athersbern)

In 2007 I judged the club Open show for the Southern Bernese Mountain Dog Club so was delighted and honoured to be asked to officiate again, this time at the Championship show in 2018. I had a lovely day, helped by my two stewards Chris and Julie. The atmosphere throughout the day was good, with applause for every class placing. It was refreshing to see people enjoying themselves, lots of laughter and smiles. We seem to have been lacking this at shows of late and the committee and Club should be proud of themselves for hosting such a good show.

Veteran Dog  2 entries, 1 absent
1st Turner's CH TANGYACHATES BEACHCOMBER. Well known Champion male of good size. He has a gorgeous head and expression with dark eyes. Decent bone for his size. Good overall shape but just dipping in topline slightly. Presented well and moved with a calm, steady gait.

Minor Puppy Dog  1 entry

1st Bridges' KERNOW FOLLOW UP. Shapely puppy of 8 months who was a bit unsure to start with but settled throughout the day. Lovely head shape, slightly loose eyes but they should tighten with maturity. Good angulation both ends, needs a bit more length of leg for perfection. Settled to move soundly all directions. Big coat, excellent presentation and handled well. Best Puppy in Show.

Junior Dog  3 entries, 1 absent
Teenager of 15 months maturing along the right lines. Correct ratios to show a balanced outline with level topline. Strong, masculine head with correct bite. Excellent ground covering gait, presented and handled to perfection. Will be one to watch I think.

2nd Rumble's HARVESTBANK IN DREAMS OF GLENBRIENZ. More mature in body than no.1 giving a decent overall shape. Strong, masculine head with good expression. Is slightly tied in at his elbows and his front movement reflects this but he is good at the rear and in profile. Didn’t really want to co-operate with his handler today, too busy enjoying himself!

Yearling Dog  3 entries, 1 absent
1st King & Green's JOSEPH VOM DURRBACHLER WALD AT ARVELLA (IMP NLD). Very nice young male of 22 months who is maturing well. Nicely marked with rich tan. He has a masculine head with dark eyes but they could be a slightly better shape. Good length of neck partially hidden by his profuse coat, with correct topline and angulations. Coming towards he toes in slightly but moves with drive from the rear. Presentation and handling were excellent.

2nd Shaw's GLANZBERG MOONLIGHT MAGIC. Happy boy enjoying his day out. Masculine head with good expression, muzzle slightly longer than ideal. Good front angulation but slightly straighter in the stifle which leads to him over reaching on the move.

Graduate Dog  3 entries, 1 absent
1st Shaw's GLANZBERG MASSIF. Rising 3 year old male showing the correct body proportions. Lovely head and temperament. Nicely angulated at the front, touch straight behind. Presentation could be better.

2nd King & Bramble's SHIRDEES LEATHAL WEAPON. Gorgeous head on this young dog with a mischievous look in his eyes, making his handler work hard as usual. He has strong bone but just too short on the leg at the moment, also being out of coat makes it look worse. I hope he grows a bit taller as he has a lot to like. Powers around the ring when he is concentrating. Presentation excellent.

Post Graduate Dog  5 entries, 2 absent
Large, impressive boy on the stand giving an excellent outline. Strong, masculine head with dark eyes, correct ears and bite. Balanced angulation front and rear, with a level topline. Presented in top form, handled to make the most of him. Profile movement very good but moves wide coming towards.
2nd Goodyear's DUNMILL SUMMER SUNRISE OVER HARVESTBANK. Won this place on his sound movement and happy temperament. Head could be stronger with tighter eyes. Excellent bone for his size.
3rd Austen's HALESBERN THE WARRIORS. Another young male not really co-operating with his handler. Insisted on pacing all the way around the ring. Medium sized dog who would benefit from more bone. Good head shape, happy temperament.

Mid Limit Dog  3 entries
Difficult class.
1st Austen's COLLANSUES EXCALIBUR. Top sized, balanced dog with a lovely head and good expression despite slightly lighter eyes. Good length of neck and level topline. Would prefer a touch more bone. Profile movement was good but a bit close at the rear. Presentation was good, as was temperament.
3rd APRIORI UILL SMITH FOR JESTERBROCK (IMP RUS). Lovely body shape on this mature male. Strong, masculine head, good length of neck and level topline. Would prefer more leg length for balance but excellent bone and presentation. Moves out with enthusiasm but not quite level today, shame as I liked him.

Limit Dog  6 entries
1st Rothery's GLAMROCK GRAFFITI ARTIST. Lovely young male just coming into his best. He is a decent size with a lovely outline. Strong, masculine head with a kind expression. He is always alert and uses his ears well which helps to show off his good neck and shoulders. Level topline, and excellent angulation. He has excellent bone for his size. Presentation was spot on and handled to advantage. He is slightly close at the rear when moving away but head-on and profile movement was excellent. Delighted to award him his second CC, hope he doesn’t have to wait too long for his well deserving crown.
2nd Hughes' WALDERSHELF CAUSING KAOS. Upper medium sized dog with a masculine head and darker markings. Adequate bone for size. This dog really comes into his own on the move powering around the ring and looking like he could do a days work. Presentation was excellent and handled very well.
3rd Bridges' DEERPARK TRAVELING MAN V KERNOW (IMP USA). Shapely male with a strong masculine head. Dark eyes and rich tan add to his calm expression. Good body shape but would prefer more length of leg for better balance. Excellent bone and feet. Could be cleaner coming and going but profile movement is good.

Open Dog  6 entries
1st Gopal's CH COLLANSUES SECRET BRIDGES. 5 year old male in his prime. Top size with bone to match giving a pleasing, balanced outline. Strong, masculine head, eyes could be a bit darker but still gives a nice expression. Good angulation and a level topline. Can stand with his back feet turning out slightly and moves a touch close at the rear too. His profile movement is lovely, covering the ground easily despite his size. Had to settle for the RCC today.
2nd Bird & Bridges' CH KERNOW SOMETHING. Darker faced mature male with the most gorgeous expression. He has a lovely head shape and really dark eyes. Level topline, good angulation both ends but slightly short in neck which his profuse coat makes look even shorter. I would prefer more length of leg to balance his body shape but he has strong bone and excellent tight feet. Excellent profile movement but toeing in today coming towards.
3rd Vaychkus & Vaickus' FLINTAS KALNU SUO AT BERNAROSO SHCM (IMP LT). Good honest dog of correct proportions. Bone is good for size. Masculine head with flat skull. Handled to get the best out of him, profile movement was excellent.

Veteran Bitch  3 entries
Three bitches of different types.
1st Flanagan's COLLANSUES ROSEBUD. Very shapely bitch with strong bone. Pretty head and showed off her expression at all times, must be a joy to show as she aims to please. Powered around the ring with drive easily due to her correct construction. Best Veteran in Show
2nd Rothery's GLAMROCK FUTURE LEGEND. Smaller bitch with bone to match. Correct proportions height to length and a balanced shape. So sound on the move especially when viewed in profile. Difficult to believe she is 10, a credit to her breeder.
3rd Toms' EMBERFAY MOONGLOW. Larger, working type of bitch of 8 years. Good head shape and nice expression. Balanced angulation front and rear. Sound in profile but toes in coming towards. Handled well.

Minor Puppy Bitch  2 entries, 1 absent
1st Glover's MAXIMA'S KINGDOM QUEEN DELTA AT LALITABERN (IMP BEL). 8 month old at her first show and a bit unsure of herself. On the smaller side at the minute but plenty of time to grow. Head developing nicely, dark eyes but a touch round. Good shoulder placement, level topline, good rear angulation and rounded rump. Moved quite happily just toeing in slightly coming towards. By the end of the day she had decided showing was okay! Best Puppy Bitch.

Junior Bitch  6 entries, 3 absent
Close decision between 1 and 2.
1st Green's WALDERSHELF MUCH LUV MARTHA. Very smart young bitch who was handled to perfection. Showed off her excellent proportions and balanced outline. Dead level topline. Decent bone for her size. Moved out soundly, just a touch untidy coming towards but this could change with maturity. Will be interesting to see how she develops.
2nd Westlake's JESTERBROCK LOVESTRUCK. Darker faced bitch with a pretty head, good length of neck but slightly longer body proportions. Good lay of shoulder, level topline and good bend of stifle. Decent bone for size. Moved soundly coming and going but rolled slightly when viewed in profile. Handled very well.
3rd Gorbould's GLANZBERG JODIE ONLY THE BEST. Decent sized bitch who wasn’t really happy today. A bit plain in head but good body proportions with good angulation front and rear. Difficult to assess movement as she was looking for her owner.

Yearling Bitch  3 entries
1st Bird & Head's CULLUMBERN ROMAN TOGA WITH MILLERMEAD JW. Lovely shapely bitch maturing along the right lines. Feminine head with dark rich tan colouring. Dark eyes, good ear set, correct bite. Excellent shoulder placement, level topline and strong hindquarters. I would prefer more length of leg for balance but she moves with style and drive. Presented and handled to perfection.
3rd Flanagan's COLLANSUES PRECIOUS ROCK. Very nice bitch who had the better length of leg I was looking for. Feminine head with kind expression. Balanced angulation which enabled her to move out well. Would just prefer more bone for size.

Novice Bitch  4 entries, 3 absent

Graduate Bitch  1 entry
1st Flanagan's COLLANSUES SOMETHING ROSIE. Upper, medium sized bitch with a decent head. Very attentive to handler and excellent temperament. Excellent proportions. Slightly upright in shoulder, level topline and good rear angulation. Bone consistent with size. Moves out well with ground covering movement.

Post Graduate Bitch  7 entries, 1 absent
1st Miles' JAYBIEM MY MY MY JW. Lovely bitch of correct breed type. Feminine head with dark eyes and correct ear set that she used well to help show off her kind expression. Correct length of neck leading into good shoulder placement. Strong, level topline, correct length of loin and a nicely rounded rump. Presentation was excellent. I don’t think I have seen this bitch look as animated as she did today and the more I moved her the better she went. Foot perfect moving in all directions and demanded that I didn’t overlook her. She had to impress me to go over the Open Bitch who I have always admired and today she went all the way. Bitch CC and Best in Show.
2nd Flanagan's COLLANSUES SECRET WHISPA. Nice honest bitch with a lot to like. Longer on the leg than first but still good proportions. Feminine head but I would prefer her to be slightly shorter in the muzzle. Sound, ground covering movement. Happy girl.
3rd Flaxman's GLANZBERG SEE THE SUN. Lovely head on this shapely bitch coming up 3 years. Another who moved out with style. Would just prefer more bone for her size and this was the deciding factor between 2 and 3.

Mid Limit Bitch  4 entries
1st Miles' JAYBIEM BURLI SHASSI JW. 2 year old bitch who came without a coat but proved she had nothing to hide. From her feminine, darkly marked head, through correct neck, dead level topline and correct tailset and carriage to her excellent conformation and bone I loved her. Moved soundly in all directions also showing her calm temperament and happy nature. Will go further when back in full coat.
2nd Flanagan's COLLANSUES SUGAR N SPICE. Different type to first being more rangy but still correct. Feminine head with dark eyes and good expression. Excellent neck, topline and croup. Good bone for her size. More exaggerated in movement than I prefer but was very happy to be here so she may be better when she is a bit calmer!

Limit Bitch  6 entries, 3 absent
Another bitch of lovely overall shape from this kennel. Strong but feminine head with gentle expression. Correct shoulder angulation, good body depth and loin length. Good bend of stifle, good bone for size being upper medium in height. Steady, sound mover.
2nd Flanagan's COLLANSUES MAGICAL DREAM. Top sized bitch with lots to like. Strong, feminine head, level topline, correct croup leading to excellent tail set and carriage. Excellent bone and feet. Very happy girl but would insist on pacing, did just enough to show me she was sound when in trot.
3rd Gorbould's BERNERHOF PRECIOUS PHOEBE. Honest type of bitch with a pretty head. Medium sized with adequate bone. Good angulation but slightly dips in topline. Untidy coming towards but profile movement was good.

Open Bitch  6 entries, 1 absent
1st Sutton's CH BERNSTEPH DIOR REMEMBER ME JW SHCM. A favourite of mine being a very feminine, medium sized bitch with a melting expression. Excellent breed type from her correct head, balanced body shape, strong bone and correct tail set. Presentation, as always was excellent and she moves so soundly in all directions. She didn’t like the heat today and it was the deciding factor between her and the excellent youngster in Post Grad. RCC.
2nd Goodyear's HARVESTBANK FIELDS OF GOLD JW SHCM. Different type to the winner but still lots to like. Strong, upper sized bitch who retains her femininity. Good length of neck leading into correct shoulders, good depth of chest. Would prefer slightly more bend of stifle. Strong bone and nice feet. Occasionally loses her topline on standing but on the move it is perfect. She is sound on the move, being very impressive in profile view. Excellent presentation and handled to get the best out of her.
3rd Miles' CH MEADOWPARK SWEETEST THING AT JAYBIEM. Medium sized bitch with bone to match. Darkly marked on her face but still feminine. Would prefer a slightly shorter muzzle. On standing she can slope off at the croup but moved soundly. Happy girl enjoying her day.
